Telecommunications and IT
Turkmenistan is actively developing the telecommunications and information technology sectors, striving for infrastructure modernization and economic digitalization. National projects are being implemented to expand internet access, develop mobile communication, and introduce modern IT solutions.
"Türkmenaragatnaşyk" agency is currently carrying out systematic work to expand the coverage of digital systems and improve service quality in buildings equipped with modern technologies. The telecommunications company "Türkmentelekom" provides all regions of the country with backbone and internal fiber-optic and radio relay communication lines, mobile communication system, high-speed internet, and television services.
At present, Turkmenistan serves as a regional information bridge and has launched high-speed fiber-optic connections in seven international directions. The postal service company "Türkmenpoçta" has maintained a reputable postal service from the last century to the present day. It is also a member of several international organizations and engages in mutually beneficial cooperation with authoritative entities such as the Executive Committee of the Regional Commonwealth in the Field of Communications (PCC), the Universal Postal Union (UPU), and the International Telecommunication Union (ITU).
On April 28, 2015, Turkmenistan launched its first national communications satellite, "TürkmenÄlem 52°E", into geostationary orbit. The satellite consists of three transmitting and receiving antennas (EAST, WEST, and MENA), providing satellite communication across Central Asia, Europe, the Middle East, and North Africa. With its ability to cover vast territories, the satellite strengthens Turkmenistan’s role as a country facilitating signal retransmission between Europe and Asia.
The project TAP (Turkmenistan, Afghanistan, Pakistan) fibro-optical network is a state-of-the-art communication infrastructure designed to support high-speed internet and data transmission across vast regions. Utilizing advanced fiber optic technology, it enables faster, more reliable connections, making it ideal for applications in telecommunications, internet services, and global communications. The network plays a crucial role in enhancing connectivity, supporting the growing demand for digital services, and fostering economic development by improving access to information and technological resources. Its high capacity and low latency ensure that it can meet the demands of modern digital economies.
The Closed Joint-Stock Company "Altyn Asyr" is one of the leading entities in the mobile communications sector. The company fulfills tasks that meet modern requirements, bringing people closer in their social lives and giving new impetus to the digitalization of the national economy.
The Closed Joint-Stock Company "Ashgabat City Telephone Network" is introducing new directions in communication services aimed at the capital’s future development, contributing to the increased prestige of the national telecommunications sector. Turkmenistan is starting to implement 5G technology – the first new generation network will be deployed in the city of Arkadag. The 5G network will provide high data throughput and will allow hundreds of thousands of devices to be connected in an area of one square kilometer.
Dedicated and hardworking communication specialists are fully committed to implementing the esteemed President's large-scale initiatives to enhance the international prestige of the telecommunications sector. They work diligently to develop information and telecommunication systems, strengthening Turkmenistan's reputation on the global stage.
Mobile communication in Turkmenistan covers most of the country's territory. The primary operator is the state-owned company "Altyn Asyr", which provides services in 2G, 3G, and 4G standards. Specialists are working on improving the quality of internet services and increasing network bandwidth.
In recent years, Turkmenistan has made progress in the digitalization of public administration, the financial sector, and education. Efforts are being made to develop e-government, enabling citizens to access public services online. Automated management systems are also being implemented in various sectors of the economy.
One of the key priorities is cybersecurity. Measures are being taken to protect national information systems, ensure the security of personal data, and counter cyber threats.
The main objectives for further development of Turkmenistan’s telecommunications and IT sector include:
• Expanding mobile network coverage and introducing 5G technology.
• Improving the quality and speed of internet access.
• Further development of e-government and digital services.
• Strengthening cybersecurity measures and data protection.
Overall, Turkmenistan is moving toward digital transformation, striving to integrate modern technologies into various aspects of life, which will enhance citizens' comfort and improve economic efficiency.
As the world becomes more connected, the telecommunications industry is leading this change and providing many opportunities for investors. Turkmenistan, a nation strategically located in Central Asia, is rapidly modernizing its telecom infrastructure.
Turkmenistan has a young and growing population that is increasingly tech-savvy. With a rising demand for reliable internet services, mobile connectivity, and digital solutions, the time is ripe for investors to capitalize on this burgeoning market. The Turkmen government recognizes the importance of the telecommunications sector in driving economic growth and has been actively promoting investments.
